Modernism in poetry Essay
Innovation. It is a course of verse, writing and workmanship by and large that utilizes and depicts ââ¬Å"new and particular highlights in the subjects, structures, ideas and styles of writing and different expressions in the early many years of the current century, however particularly after World War I. â⬠(Abrams 167) More regularly than not ââ¬Å"Modernismâ⬠takes part in ââ¬Å"deliberate and radical breakâ⬠(Abrams 167) with increasingly customary establishment of craftsmanship and culture, set up since XIX century. Here two artists of innovator age â⬠T. S. Elliot and H. Crane â⬠are contrasted with T. Solid and G. M. Hopkins, a couple of contemporary traditional writers. Iââ¬â¢d like to start the investigation with T. S. Elliot, the acclaimed writer whose very name seems like an equivalent word to word ââ¬Å"modernismâ⬠. Elliot was and is the embodiment of innovation, and pictures and stanzas from his sonnets are recollected even today, and coordinated in today works of writing and fiction. One can recollect Steven Kingââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Dark Towerâ⬠adventure where pictures of Elliotââ¬â¢s works reemerge as often as possible â⬠indeed, one of Kingââ¬â¢s volumes of that adventure is called ââ¬Å"The Waste Landsâ⬠, clearly motivated by Elliotââ¬â¢s . For instance, Elliotââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrockâ⬠had presented to us a dream of a man whose world had part in and around himself, a lost individual looking for affection which must be ruinous and considerable for him. Since he is bound in the chasm of his own cognizance, the truth is simply an enthusiastic encounter for him. He can even now watch his general surroundings, however mentally he is separated from everyone else, in the waste terrains of unfertility and profound vacancy. Prufrock (the exemplification of Elliot himself, or the peruser) lets his considerations and conclusions float off ambiguously. The outer world around him, to which he is so cynical, mirrors his inward world, denied of otherworldly tranquility. As he can't engage in a discourse with the outer world, just through the emotional monolog can Prufrock murmur his aim : ââ¬Å"Let us go at that point, you and Iâ⬠(Norton Anthology of Modern Poetry, 242). Elliot needed his saint (and the peruser) to contrast himself and a character of Danteââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Infernoâ⬠. Be that as it may, while they are indistinguishable, their destinies are extraordinary: While Guido has in any event the mental fortitude to open up to Dante, Prufrock is excessively self-satisfied and too idle to even consider making that exertion. His no one but sure can be his adjust self image â⬠a mutilated impression of himself in the reflection of outside world. He sees this individual, and asks to him for unification â⬠as though there can be an answer unique in relation to the one he gives himselfâ⬠¦ Prufrockââ¬â¢s intelligence of the ages he appears to feel comes back to him as pitiless joke. What, undoubtedly, could be the significance of ââ¬Å"life, universe and everythingâ⬠(D. Adams), if .. one, settling a pad, or losing a cloak, And moving in the direction of the window, should state: ââ¬Å"That isn't it in any way, That isn't what I implied, by any means. â⬠(Norton Anthology of Modern Poetry, 245). That Prufrockââ¬â¢s garish and shifty nature is broken is outlined in the last ten lines of the sonnet. As the intermittent pictures of and references to the ocean (ââ¬Å"silent seasâ⬠, ââ¬Å"mermaidsâ⬠, ââ¬Å"seagirlsâ⬠) crop up to an ever increasing extent, Prufrockââ¬â¢s self-avoidance turns out to be progressively checked. His clairvoyant para1yis comes full circle when he understands that even the mermaids won't help him out by singing to him; consequently, all his wellspring of conceivable motivation blurs away. (Norton Anthology of Modern Poetry, 245). He has never rea1ly been a strict man: he can't, therefore, anticipate that Christ should reestablish him to an intense life, as was Lazarus reestablished to his. It is no big surprise that while Prufrock is felt to be an embodiment to all general public of his occasions â⬠so splendid thus wonderfully void inside. In current occasions, his words had been referenced to in joke by one of the most appalling machines the human brain had ever created, Blaine the Mono: ââ¬Å"In the rooms the individuals travel every which way. In any case, I question that any of them is talking of Michelangeloâ⬠(King). Elliotââ¬â¢s other artful culmination, Gerontion, portrays a fantasy of memory. While Prufrock is in any event ââ¬Å"hereâ⬠(regardless of whether he is uncertain of his own area on the planet), Gerontionââ¬â¢s legend is simply the time, filtered through the sifter of human memory. The onlooker is neither here not there, however the remaining parts of memory, the residue of time are spread before him â⬠a captivating showcase, yet negligible basically. Elliot appears to solicit â⬠would the residue of our own memory, whenever spread before some more odd, mean as meager to him as these remaining parts of oneââ¬â¢s time intend to us now? All Elliotââ¬â¢s pictures are dull, broody and upsetting. They suggest to ask â⬠is everything? Can there be something else around us, or would we say we are lost unceasingly on the planet which wasnââ¬â¢t mean for us? Also, as Elliot hadnââ¬â¢t addressed that addresses himself, every peruser must substitute his own answers and test their legitimacy on Elliotââ¬â¢s expressions of man, world and time. Hart Crane is other case of pioneer writers, his pictures are less agonizing than Elliotââ¬â¢s and increasingly characterized, however the force they use over us is strengthened by their shrouded implications, inconspicuous from the start. Craneââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Black Tambourineââ¬Å" thinks about authorââ¬â¢s own understanding of time went through with some negro laborers in a basement. In any case, the basement extends in authorââ¬â¢s view to the size of the entire world, and its shut entryway turns into the popular mass of the three Biblical decisions â⬠MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN: ââ¬Å"numbered, gauged and discovered wantingâ⬠. All universe is by all accounts contained among ââ¬Å"here and nowâ⬠â⬠the dim basement with tambourine on the divider â⬠and enchanted ââ¬Å"somewhereâ⬠, where every single human expectation end as ââ¬Å"carcass, snappy with fliesâ⬠(Black Tambourine). ââ¬Å"At Melvilleââ¬â¢s Tombâ⬠brings dim and despairing underneath which a memory of powers waits that were splendid and horrendous once before â⬠before the Death caused significant damage, approaching the angry Ahab and anonymous mariner. The picture of the ocean is uncertain and dubious as well, for it tends to be seen as profound grave, or Death itself, or Sea of Time which will in the end give perpetual quiet to each living being. In all pioneer verse, the idea of such multipart pictures and hidden references was sharpened and definite up to its flawlessness. Presently this is an instrument which is much of the time utilized in writing and different circles of life, for example, publicizing, yet in the midst of T. S. Elliot and H. Crane it was an amazing development with which perusers were dazed artistically. To contrast and pioneer verse of Elliot and Crane, old style works by T. Tough and G. M. Hopkins are chosen. The traditional English verse of Thomas Hardy is more organized both in beat and importance than pioneer instances of Elliot and Crane. His verse can be called ââ¬Å"methodicâ⬠, for he clarifies systematically the one image which frames a sonnet. He clarifies it, subtleties it, gets it before our eyes maddeningly practical way, until the peruser not just gets it, yet is excited by its vision. ââ¬Å"Neutral tonesâ⬠presents to us a dream of lost love which transformed into destructiveness â⬠the clear lack of bias which restricts love and euphoria and satisfaction of life. The emotions develop further with every refrain â⬠from peacefulness to vacancy, to despairing, lastly to absolute gloom. The finishing up verse shapes the lesson of the sonnet, adding to the irrevocability of the sentence â⬠what is lost in time, can never be found again. ââ¬Å"The Darkling Thrushâ⬠is a case of progressively cheerful vision. Committed to the coming century, it is full with dull pictures of unmistakable significance: the entryway as the door of another age (or another Century), ice and Winter as Death itself that goes to all, and the land turns into a body which kicks the bucket along with Century, for its time has passed. Be that as it may, the unimportant voice of the thrush changes the image, enlightening it with some internal light of ââ¬Å"blessed Hopeâ⬠. Also, while the peruser (as the man who remains at the doors) is yet uninformed of a clear information on that Good Sign that solitary the winged animal has, he despite everything acknowledges the birdââ¬â¢s tune as a sign that there is promise for what's to come. Verse of Gerard Manley Hopkins is one more case of what works of art brought to the table at that point. His pictures are as positive as Hardyââ¬â¢s, if to some degree progressively familiar, and the good is available too in his sonnets. ââ¬Å"Spring and Fallâ⬠shows Margaret â⬠a little youngster who had acknowledged just because that everything in life change and in the end bite the dust, that life isn't perpetual. A childââ¬â¢s psyche can get a handle on ideas at levels they don't know about, and comprehend something while never having it clarified. It is straightforward on account of the guiltless way the kid retains the existence itself. As a grown-up, one can see a subject or thought in a totally unique manner by review it through the eyes of a kid. In the sonnet, Margaret takes a gander at death and comprehends it emblematically, through the passing of leaves to her own up and coming destruction. ââ¬Å"Godââ¬â¢s Grandeurâ⬠is another case of short and definitive old style verse. The pressure in scenes of man-made demolition, imagined with clear detail, is strengthened by similar sounding word usage. Upsetting pictures of overflowing oil and ever-rehashing trod of innumerable ages bring about profound, uncontrolled dread. Be that as it may, the end restricts all said before by references to endless nature and God as its maker and defender. It states to us that God will as definitely brings eternal life and revival after demolition, as every day he brings the morning light after the dim of night. From dread of Man to trust in God â⬠that is

Explication of Phllip Larkinââ¬â¢s ââ¬ÅCut Grassââ¬Â Essay
In Cut Grass, Philip Larkin utilizes sound to word imitation, shading and bloom imagery, and accentuation to show that demise is unavoidable, and is unconscious of explicit conditions. By standing out the cut grass from the regularly dynamic, enthusiastic month of June, Larkin shows the unforgiving idea of death, and its negligence towards its environmental factors, while all the while giving a feeling of expectation once passing arrives. In the primary verse, Larkin utilizes likeness in sound to make a distinctive picture of mown grass. The sharp hints of ââ¬Å"cut grassâ⬠suggest wildness, while the following expression ââ¬Å"lies frail,â⬠is suggestive of vulnerability and shortcoming. He keeps on resembling sounds by utilizing expressions, for example, ââ¬Å"brief is the breath,â⬠and ââ¬Å"exhale,â⬠whose sounds take after their particular activities. Through his utilization of sound to word imitation, Larkin interfaces the peruser to the grass, and accordingly brings out compassion. While the peruser is touchy towards the demise, it in any case proceeds, paying little mind to the enthusiasm of ââ¬Å"young-leafed June.â⬠Larkin likewise stands out the ââ¬Å"brief breathâ⬠from ââ¬Å"long deathâ⬠to show that life is moderately short when contrasted with the unending length of time of death. He makes most of the sonnet, in portraying passing, one sentence, from ââ¬Å"long, longâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ until the end, so as to show the drawn out and moderate kicking the bucket. He portrays the passing ââ¬Å"at summerââ¬â¢s pace;â⬠a sluggish and hesitating development that ignores its sprouting environmental factors. He shows that passing is unavoidable, and is persistently happening, even at assumed cheerful minutes. Nonetheless, Larkin additionally parts of the bargains development, to show that demise, albeit inescapable, isn't really last, and that there is potential for a the hereafter. The rehashed reference to white likewise serves to show the different sides of death; while it is unadulterated and blameless, it is additionally despairing. By representing demise, Larkin shows that however one can assess passing from alternate points of view, it definitely comes back to the out of line and brutal nature of death. He likewise specifies ââ¬Å"chestnut flowers,â⬠ââ¬Å"white lilac,â⬠and ââ¬Å"Queen Anneââ¬â¢s lace,â⬠three white blossoms, to speak to the different sides of death. Larkin embodies the white lilacs, which are commonly representative or young straightforwardness, to bow to death to show that passing is unwavering to its subordinate, youth. Howeverâ ââ¬Å"white hours,â⬠ââ¬Å"and chestnut flowersâ⬠serve to portray an extravagant, lovely climate, which likewise depicts demise. In this way, Larkin shows a good omen for a future after death, and permits the peruser help and unwinding when moving toward death. In utilizing the imagery of white and blossoms, likeness in sound, and applicable accentuation, Larkin can depict passing as both interminable and confident, and to reestablish a liberating sensation around deathââ¬â¢s discouraging nature.

The Study Of Democratization Has Been A Key Cornerstone
The study of democratization has been a key cornerstone within the field of comparative politics for the last several decades. Yet, the key mechanisms that lead countries to transition from autocracies to democracies are subject of debate that is ongoing. Building from Lipset corner stone article ââ¬Å"Social Requisites of Democracy: Economic Development and Political Legitimacyâ⬠, scholars have focused on the influence of modernization theory, specifically economic development, on the process of regime transition and consolidation. Modernization theory has been a driving force within the field, spawning countless numbers of studies that have shaped and reshaped the field of comparative politics. AR and Boix both build on the foundation of Modernization theory w ith a focus of what can be called Redistributive theory. This relies on the assumption that democracy is desired by the poor due to the ability to redistribute wealth from the rich to the rest of society, on the other hand, the elites fear the redistribution that comes with democratic transition. This implies that the probability of democratization can be related to the level of inequality due to costs and benefits associated with redistribution. AR and Boix come up with conflicting results for the effects of inequality and democracy. The Elite-Competition Approach pushes back against the importance of redistribution that is associated with democratic transition, while introducing a new key actor and different types of inequality. Unsurprisingly, AS findings regarding the relationship of inequality and democratization are different than the theories laid out by AR and Boix. Content Analysis of a Recent Film Compared Free Essays
The film, Perfume, which directed by Tom Tykwer and released in 2006, was rated R because of its restricted scenes. Back to the 1930 to 1968 the United States, such a film like Perfume may have difficult in being released based on the Production Code. Production Code was an industry censorship guideline that governed most of United States motion picture. We will write a custom essay sample on Content Analysis of a Recent Film Compared or any similar topic only for you Order Now It has 3 General Principles which stated the films could not lower the audiencesââ¬â¢ moral standards, should contain the correct standards of life and not be ridiculed. According to the Production Code, Perfume will have 3 main problems, Crimes against the Law, Sex and Costume. Perfume has a subtitle called the Story of A Murderer. Obviously, it describes a story of crime. However, in the film, there are so many directly bloody, crucial scenes about murder, which are violation of the first rule in Production Code, Crime against the Law. For example, at the beginning of the film, when the main character, Jean-Baptiste Grenouille was a baby, he was sent to the orphanage. While other orphans wanted to suffocate him with a pillow in order to keep their own possession. In this scene, the director showed the whole process of killing, which is against the rule that indicates brutal killings are not to be presented in detail. As the same, there are also brutal scenes about the old woman being cut the throat as well as Jeanââ¬â¢s mother and the scapegoat of the murder being hung to death. All these scenes are clearly projected without any editing. Besides the violation of the Production Code of Crime against the Law, there are also restricted scenes about Sex. For instance, one of these scenes is the birth of Jean. The director shot the whole process of the mother giving birth to Jean, even included her cutting umbilical. It must be against the rule of Sex that stated scenes of actual child birth, in fact or in silhouette, are never to be presented. What is more, in the end of the film, when Jean was about to be killed in the square, he used his perfume to make onlookers excited and have sex with each other, even includes homosexual kiss. In order to make shaking visual effect, the director didnââ¬â¢t do any editing on this scene, which strongly offense the Production Code of Sex. Apart from Crime against the Law and Sex, what the film violated the Production Code most must be Costume. Perfume told a story about odor. The murderer, Jean, found the most beautiful scent came from the natural smell of virgin. So he killed 13 virgins and took off their clothes to purity their scent. After each murder, the girlââ¬â¢s corpus would be found naked. As a consequence, the violation of Costume can not be avoided. In the Production Code of Costume, it claimed that complete nudity is never permitted and undressing scenes should be avoided. Nevertheless, these scenes were all projected in Perfume. Moreover, the scene mentioned before about the group sex also conflict the Production Code of Costume. As an R rated film, Perfume exactly contains various restricted scenes. Except the violations mentioned before, there are also scenes counter the Production Code. For example, Jean used a cat for experiment and put it into the distillation furnace, which can be considered as apparent cruelty to animal; as well as the violence and expletives. A movie like this apparently can not get PCA approval to be released. Nevertheless, the film can be played in theaters today without any cut and edit, even though it was rated R and could just be watched by portion of people. It witnessed that social standards of motion picture has changed a lot over time. How to cite Content Analysis of a Recent Film Compared, Essay examples

Marketing And The Media Essays - Business Ethics, Codes Of Conduct
Marketing And The Media Matthew Courtney May 2000 Media Ethics and Their Relation to Business In this world, there is an obvious connection between the media and its involvement in business ethics. No matter what the form of media looked at, they all have the ability of being either an aid to businesss success or a detriment. The press and the media are responsible for reporting news, issues and events as clearly as possible. Any distortions can cause the message being sent to be misinterpreted or completely wrong. News organizations are given a responsibility of representing the public interest. In order to gain the publics trust, such broadcasters are required to work within the parameters of ethical and responsible new casting. No matter what the issue, company or news being reported on, every media organization works off of a Code of Ethics. This is a sort of safeguard to the honesty of the organization. It demands truth telling, privacy of individuals being documented, and avoids the many conflicts that could possibly arise as a result of misinforming the public. Stylebooks are also used in order to form a generalized style of writing to allow for easy read through, from one writer to the next. There are many different kinds of businesses in this world. The successes of these businesses are primarily as a result of their reputation. The media winds up being a medium that forms many of the reputations. The way a news broadcast, print, radio and even Internet presents a company has a great effect on the resulting emotion or feeling one associates with a business or company. This is why the media ethics are so important to the introduction, growth, and development of a company. Large companies rely on their name in the media and are always ready to respond to any situation with a quick answer or rebuttal. In addition to the reputation of a company being important, so is the reputation of the organization doing the broadcast. Names in the business world that are known to be accurate and reliable include CNN, CSPAN, local news stations such as CBS, NBC, ABC etc. Those who watch the business world closely are more inclined to go to reliable sources for their information. What is reported on these stations are considered as true based mainly on their past records. But when the occasion does arise, where the media goes about treating a business, or situation in an unethical manner many problems arise. In order to understand this type of situation clearly, it is good to look at actual examples where the media ethics become involved in communicating or the miscommunication of a business. Many recent problems in the media world are being attributed to the advances in technology. Although these advances are great and making life easier, things are being done so quickly that many important steps are being forgotten. In the rush to present a story first, many journalists are forgetting to be accurate and balanced in their covered stories. The pressures of live broadcast are requiring journalists to focus on a new set of questions in order to check and be sure the position and format in which they present their story is clear of any unethical issues. A committee known as SPJ is focused on the ethics of journalism in all forms of media and claims The SPJ Code of Ethics encourages journalists to minimize harm by recognizing that our coverage can hurt, cause discomfort or be insensitive. During an event we must remember to show good task. Avoid pandering to lurid curiosity. Being aware is the most important thing. As long as the media is aware of the impact they will have on their audience, they will be better able to communicate the core of what is at hand. In the business world there is so much competition, that failure is a common thing. In order to be secure in the business world ethics becomes unavoidable. The press and media are attracted to ethical issues on both sides of the matters. A business that is ethical will be regarded and presented almost always in an ethical manner. These are the ones who succeed and are able to make a reputation

Trade protection in agriculture by European Union and the United States results in gains for some and loss for others. Evaluate the impact of US Farm Policy or EU Common Agriculture Policy on developing countries. Question 2Trade protection in agriculture by European Union and the United States results in gains for some and loss for others. Evaluate the impact of US Farm Policy or EU Common Agriculture Policy on developing countries. The European Union (EU) is the agricultural leader among developed countries in international trade. It is well-known as a world's major food exporter. In 2010, for example, its agricultural exports, mainly processed foods like beverages, essential oils and food preparations, reached the record level of à ¢Ãâà ¬91 billion (Fritz, 2011). Nevertheless, its position as the world's largest importer, mainly from developing countries, is far more significant. This was proven where around 72% of its agricultural imports are originated from developing countries, which accounted on average US$83 billion worth of agricultural products over the period of 2007 to 2009. This rate is higher than the combined imports of the United States, Japan, Canada, Australia and New Zea land from developing countries, which is around 38% and accounted on average US$64 billion for the same period (Matthews, 2010a; European Commission, 2010).European flag outside the CommissionFor instance, soya, the single most important agricultural commodity imported into the EU, is mainly supplied by Brazil and Argentina. Other important tropical products include coffee, bananas, cocoa beans and palm oil supplied almost entirely by developing countries as well (Fritz, 2011).The EU's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) was introduced in the early 1960s at a time where farming accounted for a large share of Europe's GDP and population (Bureau Matthews, 2005). The purpose of forming this policy is to promote agriculture throughout the EU by influencing prices, output and farmers' incomes, including provision to protect the rural and agricultural commodity. Apparently, the CAP is introduced based on two pillars, with each pillar funding different policies in different ways. Pillar 1 co mprises both direct payments...

Summary - Assignment Example 1-3). Since there was an air of authority on how it was discussed, the article was found believable by many students. History Department Chair Paul Freedman said that Wikipedia can be used ââ¬Å"for general orientation, as an introduction to a topicâ⬠but not as an authority on a particular subject (Torbati, 2007, par. 9). Dean Stephen Lassonde find Wikipedia prone to many errors compared to hard copies, which undergo rigorous editing standards (Torbati, 2007, par. 13). The inaccuracy of the website pushed the History Department at Middlebury to ban it as a citation source (Torbati, 2007, par. 15-16). Students may use Wikipedia for finding a simple background of the subject they are working on but it should not be their only source. The legitimacy and authority of hard copies have more definite and factual information rather than a web-based encyclopedia, especially one that is open for everyone to upload information to. Not because it is written ââ¬Å"like itââ¬â¢s somethi ng possibleâ⬠¦because of (its) authoritative pronouncementâ⬠does not mean that itââ¬â¢s real and true (Torbati, 2007, par. 32). Positioning and Communications Strategy for a New Weight-Loss Drug Essay
Positioning and Communications Strategy for a New Weight-Loss Drug Overweight Adults in the U.S - Essay Example She was the companyââ¬â¢s senior director of marketing. Her 20 years of experience in the industry as the marketing head of prescription drugs for the company helped it achieve these profitable heights (Friedhoff 45). In the recent past, she was responsible for leading six drug campaigns for the companyââ¬â¢s most successful drug called Zimistat. Up-to-date the company has not had another successful drug in comparison to Zimistat. In this case, Barbaraââ¬â¢s first order of business was developing a reliable positioning strategy and viable marketing communication strategy for the drug. In 2008, the company awaited patiently for FDA approval with plans of launching the product in the next year. Executive Summary Cambridge Sciences Pharmaceuticals (CSP) publicized a first of its kind prescription drug FDA approved drug tailored for moderately overweight individuals named Metabical. The company conducted trial on overweight participants who reached their expected weight loss goa ls in 12 weeks. Despite the delays in pricing, the company estimated the price of the drug as $3-$5 per day. The least treatment period covered 12 weeks. This report sheds light on the development of a reliable positioning strategy and viable marketing communication strategy for the companyââ¬â¢s drug. ... This also aids in the identification of potential market targets. The third section is the SWOT analysis for the product. This identifies the potential strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats for the drug. Thus, the company identifies the communication strategy to adopt in the advertising of the drug. The final focus is the most appropriate communication strategy that suits best the drug. This is advantageous as the company enhances better communication with the consumers. The company spent much money and time on FDA trials and in R&D in trying to decide on the most appropriate marketing communications strategy and positioning plan. Barbara was aware that so as to recover this lump sum investment, the drug required two issues addressed. These included the need for a steady, long-term demand, and a successful launch to attract customers. She reasoned that if the drug did not reach out and appeal to the customers, Metabicalââ¬â¢s credibility would raise questions as the FD A approval would be of little significance. Barbaraââ¬â¢s challenges came in the optimal segmentation, the positioning and targeting of the Metabical drug. After establishing this, she could now concentrate her energies on creating a time schedule for all major activities and assessing the current communicating and marketing strategies. The case studies helped her in posing several questions. These include: a. Who are the most suited target consumers? b. How are the participants going to get instructions from the company? c. Where are the participants coming from and how to contact them? d. What was the most appropriate message for delivery drafted for the participants? Retailing businesses Essay
Different retailing businesses have very different distribution methods based on the types of product that they sell, some arguably more effectively than others. As mentioned in an earlier assignment, there are three main types of distribution channels. The first is the channel that goes from the producer, then to the wholesaler, then to the retailer or sells to the consumer. The second channel starts with the producer who sells straight to the retailer, who then sells to the consumer. The third channel goes directly from the producer to the consumer. Channels one and two are classed as indirect marketing channels, whereas channel three is a direct marketing channel as it goes straight from producer to consumer. All of the distribution channels start with a producer who will create the products, for example the person that milks the cows to get milk. For the first channel, the producer makes the product and then sells it to a wholesaler, such as Costsco who will purchase a huge quantity of products from them. They would do this to make sure that they have enough to sell onto retailers. They would keep a large amount of the product, for example some kind of confectionary, in there warehouse so theyââ¬â¢re in a suitable environment to be kept until theyââ¬â¢re sold on. Next, the retailer, who could be a small store or a larger store, who would want to purchase a specific amount of products from the wholesalers, not in as bulk form as the wholesaler would have purchased them in. This method would typically be used by used by smaller, more personal stores, that donââ¬â¢t need to buy in such bulk. This channel is effective for confectionary products for example, as Costco can get sweets such as Dairy Milk bars, or Skittles, at an incredibly low price for huge boxes. It is good because it means that the businesses further down the chain will have confidence that they will be able to get the products that they want because the wholesaler gets the items I such bulk and if they sell all of their products, they can replenish easily. For the second channel, the retailer can give their consumers a guarantee that the product is fresher than if they used channel one, as they are getting the product directly from the producer before selling it to the consumer. This is because companies get the products directly from producers so they can guarantee the quality, unlike the first channel where the products go through two separate distributors which could contaminate the product orà raise the risk of it being damaged. An example of this would be the electronics company Sony. Due to the fact that Sony produces their own products and then sells them onto other electronic stores such as Currys/PC World who will then sell the products onto the consumers. The third Channel will typically deal with the consumer directly rather than using a middleman. This means that the customer will get the product or service at that moment on purchase. An example of this could be seen with Greggââ¬â¢s Bakery. Due to the fact they will have their products made on site and would be able to sell their customers everything they have produced in store without using other stores ford or bringing in any assistance. By doing this it gives Greggs a better look by being able to say that they produce all of their products on site and they can also guarantee that the products are fresh. Different sectors of business will use different techniques when going through the distribution stage differently. This can be from the difference of storing products whilst distributing them and how they actually transport the product to the next person in the channel. For example, how a food retailer and gets their products distributed will be different to how a clothing sto re gets theirs. For a restaurant they use a wide variety of produces such as local farmers and local fishermen, depending on the type of restaurant that they own. They could have very specific producers, for example if they were a halal based restaurant they would have to be very specific about their supplier. Then they will have to either make a deal with the producer/supplier so they can collect produce direct from them. Then they will prepare the food ready to cook it and will store the prepared ingredients safely at the correct temperature. They will then wait for the person at the end of the chain ââ¬â the consumer ââ¬â to come to the restaurant to cook it for them. This is good for the producer because money will track back to them through the restaurant gaining the money from selling the meals. The money goes into the restaurant from customers pockets, and then the restaurant will use a portion of this money to re-purchase some supplies from the producer. This is when a good working relationship will develop between them as they will gain more sales and earn more money back. Continuing with a food retailer, Greggs or a restaurant will want to get fresher ingredients than other retailers so that they can make sure they produce all of their products to be as fresh as can be. Thisà can be done for example by Greggââ¬â¢s own in-store bakeries having their ingredients delivered in the morning and then they bake them the same morning to make sure they are as fresh as possible. When they order the ingredients from the producers they will have to check that the supplier is storing the produce correctly before purchasing, otherwise they may purchase products that could be unsuitable for them to use and if they did use them, could create problems for them in the future. A good example of this could be seen with restaurants purchasing fish. A lot of the time they would send an employee to get it directly after it has been caught on the boat . They do this so that there are no issues with how the fish is stored, as if it is stored incorrectly whilst distributed it will cause severe food poisoning and could lead to the restaurant getting sued or shut down. A clothing retailer will start the process from the producer then they will involve the their designers and then they would create the products. If the retailer manufactures their own brand clothing for example Primark the producers send the finished garments directly to their warehouses fir distribution into their stores. If it is a clothing retailer that buys garments from fashion houses or via intermediaries then the finished items would go to their wholesalers and then potentially go to retailers depending on what business it is and then finally, they would be bought by the consumers. They would start the process by collecting the cotton from the cotton farmers then they would be shipped off to the factories where weavers and designers will create the fabrics, the fabric factories will then sell them to clothing manufacturing companies who will create something that retailers can sell on to make a profit from the whole process. When they have been created they will choose either to sell them onto a wholesaler or to only sell it in their particular stores. With some businesses having stores in other countries it means they have to have all of their products send to one area then they will have to have those products sent to other stores across to other countries, extending the distribution channels. A retail business such as House of Fraser will be using the second channel. This means that they will get their clothing material/parts sent to them and then thy will create their products, and then send them to their retail stores. Because they have a large area inside their stores to store and display their stock it means they can have a large amount of one clothing item on sale at once. Becauseà House of Fraser is a bigger company than Greggs they will be using more trucks to get their products to them. Another difference between the two would be that House of Fraser will be able to store their products for a longer period of time due to them selling the non-perishable products unlike Greggs, who make the majority of their products on a daily basis and at the end of the day would have to throw those products away otherwise they would go off. In terms of cost, a restaurant will be willing to spend money in order to get products distributed to them in a safe and hygienic way, as long as they know the full process that the products take. For other businesses, such as Primark, the aim is to get them distributed to them at a very low cost, as long as the products arenââ¬â¢t damaged. This is because the products arenââ¬â¢t perishable and there is no need to store them in any specific way to keep them secure.

Should Animals Be Used for Testing Purposes? Testing on animals has always been a controversy often debated. Millions of animals are tested on each year to aid in the research and development of commercial and scientific products. Animals get tested on to ensure the safety of human use or consumption in anything from beauty products to medicine. Testing has enabled life-saving advancements in medicine; however it is no longer necessary to harm animals in the process of saving humans. Animal testing should be deemed unethical and illegal for several reasons. There are alternatives to animal testing which eliminates the need for animals to suffer any longer. New found studies show how much distress animals actually go through during the testing period. Current laws and regulations against animal testing arenââ¬â¢t strict enough and have no protected animals from physical and psychological harm. Animal activists have argued for decades against the cruel and inhumane mistreatment of animals and it is time that animal testing is put to a stop. An estimated 50-100 million animals are used in experimentation each year. The term animal experimentation is used to describe an animal that is testing the safety of products, devices and medicines. Animal testing has been around for decades and it is no doubt that they have saved millions of lives when we did not have such advancements in technology. My research focuses on medical imaging and image processing to understand structure and brain function of both healthy and diseased brain. Specifically, some of my interests and expertise include: 1) developing improved MRI relaxometry methods and their applications towards diseased brain, 2) investigating the relationship between brain structure and function and cognitive performance in both healthy and diseased brain such as multiple sclerosis (MS), 3) investigating the neurophysiological bases of brain white matter signals; 4) developing potential biomarker for multiple sclerosis using iron sensitive MRI measures. Past Research: My PhD thesis combined the development of MRI methods and their applications to patients with MS. The mainâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This work addressed means to overcome the tissue heating limitations to enable more rapid multi-slice T2 mapping. The tissue heating limitations were overcome by shortening the echo train lengths. Consistent T2 values were found with as few as 4 refocusing RF pulses compared to 20 refocusing RF pulses. RF power savings through the use of reduced number of RF pulses enabled increased slice coverage. That means, using the improved method, MRI scan time can be reduced by 5 times compared to the previous method. This T2 mapping approach is useful for obtaining accurate T2 values in grey matter and white matter in the brain. These findings were originally published in [1] and [2]. Second, evaluate the iron dynamics in MS using improved T2 mapping method using 26 age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers and patients with multiple sclerosis. Compared to controls, the MS patients had smaller deep grey matter volumes and increased iron content in these structures over two years, but significant changes were found one the deep grey matter structures. This finding indicates, combination of atrophy and T2 measurements in deep grey matter can be used as biomarkers to monitor disease progression and dynamics of iron accumulation in MS. This work has been published as a conference proceeding [3] and then as journal article [4]. INTRODUCTION TO PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL: Performance appraisal or performance review is an analysis of an employeeââ¬â¢s work habits undertaken at a fixed point in time to determine the degree to which stated objectives and expectations have been reached. Performance appraisal or review is very beneficial and important for the evaluation of the staff and of course for the effective management. Appraisals are of great help regarding organizationââ¬â¢s employee and also play a vital role i n improving organizational performances. Formal performance appraisals are conducted every year normally in the last half of the year to review how the organization is performing and what strategies should be undertaken to improve the organizations performance. It is a straight line process for example the staff is appraised by their managers, the managers are appraised by the directors, and the directors are appraised by the Cooââ¬â¢s who are generally appraised by the founder or the chairman of the company. 2. 1 TYPES OF PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL: The different types of performance appraisals are formal annual performance appraisals, handwriting analysis, skill or Job related tests, informal one to one review discussions, probationary reviews, survey of opinion of others who have been dealing with the staff, counseling meetings, observation on the Job and assessment centers including observed group exercises and test presentations. 1. 2. PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL PROCESS: Performance appraisal is a process which takes place qu arterly or yearly and is the process of interaction between the employees and their managers. In this process the performance of the employee is assessed, with the manager telling or describing the employees their weaknesses and strengths and also identifying the opportunities that how can the employee improve their performance within the organization. Performance appraisal is the least liked responsibility any manager has to perform. The first step which comes in performance appraisal is review preparation. In this process the manager makes the objectives that the organization wants to meet in the future. An analysis of the employees is then taken out because employees or individuals must know what the organization is expecting from them and how they can work to achieve the objectives stated by the firm. Step two in performance appraisal is the assessment. This step is all about giving the timely feedback as it has proved to be very beneficial for the organization. For instance if an employee works well to achieve an objective, the positive feedback should be given to them as soon as possible rather than waiting for weeks to let them know as it might have a negative effect on their confidence as well as performance level. Step three is reviewing communication. This is all about reviewing the past and the current performance of the employee and if the performance is not up to the mark the manager should politely explain them that what should be done to improve their performance. Step four in the process is appropriate setting. Make sure that the atmosphere where the manager is going to deliver the appraisal is very friendly and welcoming. No threats should be given to the employee as this might De-motivate them and as a result they may not be able to perform 100%. Step five in the process is delivering, for instance it Leary explains the appraisal in simple language as the usage of the code words or difficult words might make it difficult for them (staff or employee) to understand it properly and they may have confusion which might proved to be harmful for the employee and also for the organization. The final step in this process is encouragement. At the end of the process the managerââ¬â¢s responsibility is to encourage the employee and boost their confidence by adding words like we have faith in you or we trust your abilities or you are capable. CHAPTER 2: LITERATURE REVIEW 2. 0 INTRODUCTION In this chapter the past and the current strategies of Marks Spencer will be discussed and in the end of this chapter we will also give a brief explanation about how employer can improve their Performance appraisal (PA) process. There will also be discussions on the employees and the manager roles that how can they contribute for a better service and reputation of the organization. First of all we will talk about the staff management strategies of Marks Spencer for instance, how they benefited from those strategies, what were the drawbacks of those strategies and what did Marks Spencer did to solve those issues or problems arising by implementing those strategies. You read "Mr Taha Uppal" in category "Papers" Performance appraisal helps in evaluating the employeeââ¬â¢s performance as it gives a clear light on how an employee can improve their performance and skills. However, performance appraisal in depth will be discussed this chapter. 2. 1 THE EVOLUTION OF PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL: Sometime near World War 1, (WAD Scott) has the credit to present the world with what performance appraisal is. However, performance appraisal was known by the mid asses and became very popular in the organization or companies. McGregor (1957) also played a vital role in discussing about performance appraisal in sassââ¬â¢s and assââ¬â¢s. Itââ¬â¢s a process by which the individual tries to look in the future with some valuable assumptions and to plan what should be done in the future to meet their goals. Performance appraisal helps in goal setting. In the year 1970, this process of performance appraisal became more widespread and many of the firms started using this process in order to gain success however, by practicing this process a large number of legal cases were brought. In the years sassââ¬â¢s and sassââ¬â¢s the process of performance appraisal became very popular and according to Williams (1998) it improved the performance up to a certain extent and also generated motivation which is very useful for an organization. According to Fletcher (2008), performance appraisal is conducted differently in the Western and the Asian cultures however; both of these cultures use this process and are benefiting from it despite the fact that around 90% or more staff doesnââ¬â¢t like this process. 2. 2 WHY IS PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL SO NECESSARY? Questions like why performance appraisal is used in companies when it did not exist in the past and the companies were still doing great? Why is it so important to use performance appraisal? Canââ¬â¢t an organization run efficiently and effectively without the performance appraisal system? Weiss and Buckley (1998) tried to give an answer for this by stating that performance appraisal is very useful because it gives an idea to the employees how can they improve their performance and also this process helps in rising their commitment towards their organization. There is great importance of performance appraisal within the firm. The organization whether small or big, private or government or any other type of firm should be exempt from having a formal performance appraisal (PA) program. PA process has benefits like improved immunization within the firm, addressing the problem and tries to resolve them through this process of PA and gives the employee confidence and boosts their morale. However, while planning performance appraisal process the employer should bear in mind that it is a slow and time consuming process and there might be some obstacles during the process which for some time may make this process even slower than expected. We can see the companies who have introduced this process of performance appraisal are the ones who do the most business in their respected fields such as Ezra, Louis Button, Marks Spencer, Gucci, Hugo Boss etc. When employees know that they are an important part of an organization and all their suggestions or ideas are valuable they even work harder so that they can get promotions or there may be an increase in their salaries and this can only be done by performance appraisal process. PA process not only identifies the training needs within an organization or firm but also identifies the hidden talent which may have a very positive effect on the firmââ¬â¢s reputation. For instance if the staff is highly trained they are in a better position to deal with all their customers which plays a very positive role towards the success of an organization. . 3 PURPOSE OF PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL: The most effective purpose to use performance appraisal is to improve the performance of the employees who are working for an organization. There are two most important purposes for which the performance appraisal is used one of which is maintenance of organization control and secondly to measure the efficiency with which the companyââ¬â¢s human resources are being used. Cummings 1973) however, there are other purposes of performance appraisal as well for instance it helps in improving the morale of the employees working for the organization, more importantly also identifying when does the staff or employees need training, communication improvements, counseling and setting targets which the organization aims to meet (Britton and Gold 2003-04). As discussed above perf ormance appraisal is used to determine the strengths and weaknesses off the employees and providing them with the best training in order for them to give their best at work. However, by conducting the performance appraisal process both the organizations and the employees have advantages for example McGregor (1972) in his paper ââ¬ËAn uneasy look at performance appraisalââ¬â¢ stated that performance appraisal meets the needs of OTOH the employees and the organization however, the difference is it meets three needs in total one for which is organization and the other two for the employees or the individual. Bowels and Coats (1993) conducted a survey which was sent to 250 West midland companies in the year 1992, where the organization were asked the question on the effectiveness of performance appraisal in the organization. However, in the results they found out that the performance appraisal plays an effective role to improve the communication skills of the employees and also improves the communication between the employees and the employer which has many benefits costly in favor of the organization. On the other hand it was very useful for when and how the training is needed for a number of employees to improve their skills. However, around 90% of the employees did not favor the performance appraisal process and commented it has certainly no use and is time wasting. Many organizations want to become the best in productivity or simply want to produce more and quality products so in order to achieve all of these objectives organizations choose and introduce performance appraisal process within the organization as this is the most successful way of achieving goals such as higher productivity or lean reduction. This process of performance appraisal gives a clear direction that where the organization is heading towards or what are the goals the organization or the firm. As discussed before, it not only measures a firmââ¬â¢s employeeââ¬â¢s performance but also gives a clear picture of an organizationââ¬â¢s performance. The example to illustrate this is performance appraisal measures the work done by the employees and also the organization on a weekly or quarterly basis. An organization can have all the information of their employees and their productivity by using this process. Another useful purpose of performance appraisal is that it gives a clear picture to the employees that where do they stand and what are they supposed to do in order to improve their skills and position within the organization. This way the organization can have a full advantage of their work force because if their employees need training, they train them and as a result the work force becomes very useful and experienced which in the long run is very beneficial for the organization as well as the employees. 2. 4 BEHAVIOR MAINTENANCE MODEL (CUMMINGS AND SWABS): The IBM model which was presented by Cummings and Swabs attempts to show owe the employees are motivated and opt to perform well within the organization. In their model they tried to explain the IBM model in four different steps. The first step in this model is goal aspirations which lead to goal attainment. When the goal attainment is achieved by the employee it gives them a sense of Job satisfaction and they become more focused on their Job and try to work even more hard. However, when the employee is satisfied with their Job they become automatically motivated towards their work which is very effective for the organization. 2. A BRIEF EXPLANATION OF PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL IN MARKS AND SPENCER: performance appraisal give Marks Spencer all the required information about their employees as it helps MS to help improve their skills through training and making sure that they are capable enough for the Job they are being trained for. As most of the big companies or retailers conduct performance appraisal once or twice every year, Marks Spencer is also one of the British companies known for conducting performance appraisal twice every yea r. In this process the employees get feedback from their managers about their performance and if the performance of the employees is not up to the mark they are suggested with different strategies to adopt n order to improve their performance as it is believed that the employees play the most important part in an organizationââ¬â¢s success and thus are the most important and effective assets of any organization like Marks Spencer. The performance records are encouraged to use by the employees as it plays an important factor in setting up the personal objectives that support their continued development. Whenever an appraisal system is carried out at Marks Spencer (normally takes every 12 months to conduct an appraisal) discussions are being made about the current progress of the company as well as the employees and a lot of new ideas are narrated about how to improve the concerned areas within the organization. These meetings are always done by the managers who work in M regarding their employees and are kept confidential. If any of the employees or workers at M do not perform well they are given more training and make sure that they understand how the organization works and operates. Rewards are given to the employees who prove that they are working best and the organization is benefiting from their efforts which are being put in. For instance in Marks and Spencer if the sales exceed the expected number or are higher than expected all the employees are given a bonus and also receive a bonus gift voucher of 20% which in fact plays a vital role in staff motivation. Also according to the research on motivation conducted by Frederic Taylor money is the only motivator and the only reason due to which the employees work hard to achieve their and the organizationââ¬â¢s objectives they work for. According to Taylor ââ¬Å"If the workers were paved per item made, they would want to make more and work harder. â⬠Marks and Spencer uses Tailorââ¬â¢s theory by providing their employees or staff with handsome salaries as they think to keep the staff motivated paying them with bonuses and retreating them with some discount cards would be beneficial for the organization and as the staff will put in their efforts to make M a success by providing their customers a better service and by creating a friendly atmosphere in the stores which obviously every customer likes. On the other hand, M also uses Herbageââ¬â¢s two factor theory by paying them with handsome salaries but more important to note according to Herbageââ¬â¢s theory is that M make their employees feel special and important in the business as the upper management ask for suggestion from all the employees and also providing them with the best working environment to motivate hem. As seen in the table below Marks and Spencer has got the highest reputation in the recent years as compared to their rivals such as Sad, tests, Morison, Ginsburg and Waitress and thatââ¬â¢s only done with the fair and proper selection of the employees for the Jobs through interviews and as well as the tests. By going through the process MS makes sure that the right candidate is selected for the Job and the organization can benefit from them. 2. STRATEGIES THAT MARKS AND SPENCER USED IN THE PAST: Marks and Spencer in the past have tried a lot of strategies to improve their staff performance. The strategy which Marks and Spencer used in the past was to sell its products on discounted prices or higher sales which at one point gave rise to the sales but on the other hand when people realized the clothes designs are the same and not changing their sales fell dramatically. MS did not emphasize on innovation but they tried to grab shopperââ¬â¢s attention by advertising and give them g reat deals and high discounts on their products. Another strategy that M favored was expansion overseas as the top management thought itââ¬â¢s the biggest opportunity to expand abroad because in that way MS will see a rise in their sales. The main focus f MS was to target the European markets specially Germany because in the recent years the population of Germany increased from 65 million to 80 million and also is the biggest exporter after USA with a lot of potential and industrial strength. However, firstly MS planned to expand in Germany in the asses but later dropped this strategy because the property costs were too high at that time but the main reason to drop this strategy was the recession of the German economy in asses. However in the late in asses the market position of Germany looked attractive and impressive which therefore forced MS to expand in to the German market. Marks and Spencer also played a vital role regarding waste as an estimate states that the waste all over the United Kingdom is around 400 tones which comes from different parts of the industry such as construction, households or discharged packaging. The waste that comes out is not recycled properly and the result is landfill sites which takes many years to decompose and is also very harmful for the human health. However, the strategy that Marks and Spencer put emphasis on is that in the recent years 2010-2011 they have tried to achieve a recycle rate around 90% and also they have tried and achieved the reduction in waste by around 20%. Marks and Spencer in the year 2006-7 had 133 million clothes hangers and instead of throwing or recycling them the company used around 80% of the hangers again. 2. . 1 OPPORTUNITIES FOR IN THE GERMAN MARKET: MS focused on expanding in the German market because the GAP of Germany is about three times higher than the United Kingdom with a staggering El 5000 billion. German consumer has a 50% higher expenditure than the Aukââ¬â¢s market also 22% higher than France which is the second biggest market in the Europe. Inflation rate is under 2% in the Germany which attracted the Marks and Spencer manag ement the cost to expand in the German market with expectation of higher sales which M was lacking in the United Kingdom. According to the research conducted by the well known news channels CNN and BBC M had examined the customers need in Germany for instance what exactly did the customer want and catered accordingly. 2. 7 MARKS SPENCER CURRENT STRATEGIES: The current aim of M is to become the worldââ¬â¢s most sustainable brand by the year 201 5 and for that they are following a plan called plan A. The plan A consist about many things about how to make world a better place to live with a few things which ops the list in plan A are cut carbon emissions, reduce waste and importance on health and well being. As the world is getting more educated day by day which means people are aware of what should be done to make this planet a better place to live in and also become very conscious about environmental and also for the natural issues. This is the reason for which MS launched plan A in the year 2010. The primary focus in this plan is to change the climate and also reducing the waste. 2. 8 EVALUATION: As discussed in this chapter that Performance appraisal is very useful for any type of organization but there are always some exceptions. For example, if the managers fail to grade their staff according to their performance there are quite high chances that the company or the organization could land in hot water.
